June 21 Day 20 95 miles

This ended up being a longer day than we expected. In fact, we were riding longer than any day to date. We bid the Rockies goodby in Salida, and followed the Arkansas River most of the day. We were in a ravine initially, that opened up into a dry valley. The Arkansas is a good sized river, even this close to the Rockies, and it is full and rushing with recent snow melt. As the river became bigger, and more chaotic with rapids, we started seeing many signs for river rafting, and then rafts full of screaming, frenetic people racing downstream.

By midmorning we were confronted with a headwind that was as strong as any that we have encountered, and stayed with us for the rest of the day. Between this and a couple of flat tires, we were riding all day, finally pulling in to Pueblo at 5 PM after 9 plus hours on the road. We are now in the high plains country, with broad views all around.

So long to the Rockies as we leave Salidas

The river widens as we head downstream. We made a few stops along the way for photos, including this suspension bridge across the river. We opted not to make a crossing here.

It was fun to watch the rafters go ripping down the river.

We ended up making our way to Canon City, and having lunch with the Brits outdoors at DiRitos. The competition across the street at Bikes and Brews looked tempting, but they were looking for a different kind of biker.

We made another stop at the rock and gem shop for photos. I decided against adding one of these samples to my bike bag.

We were very relieved to reach Pueblo. Michael expresses his contentment during Route Rap (The summary and description of our next ride held each evening)

An added benefit at the hotel was a lot full of vintage cars, in town for a big rally.
