June 25 Day 24 50 miles

I didn't even know that Dodge City was a real place until we showed up here. We had a late start due to the short ride today. However, we were bucking a stiff headwind for the second half of the ride, and put in a strong morning's work to get here.

There is a fun museum in Dodge City, intended to re-create a little piece of the old west. They provided some insights to the era, and informative displays about the people, habitation, and (what else) guns.

We each check our bikes over in the morning, making sure that there are no flat tires, and that the bikes are good to go. Everyone has a bicycle computer with GPS that tracks our progress and informs us of turns and other waypoints along the way, to minimize the number of wrong turns. Dave indicates that he is ready.

I'm sure that you will get tired of me pointing out that this is wheat and cattle country. The area has some of the biggest meat processing facilities in the country.

To our delight, we located the traditional soda fountain in Cimarron, and filled up on shakes and ice cream.

Less pleasant was a tire blow out on Michael's Bike. We were lucky to have Mark with us, and the van nearby, to deliver a new tire..

Dodge city is proud of its cowboy heritage.

We enjoyed visiting the re-created Main Street of Dodge City, and reading about the history of the west.

And, we had a little fun getting into the spirit of things.
